Are independent developers going to be able to make iPod games? Maybe porting some of the freeware/shareware out there? Or is this an Apple only money spinner?

I really doubt that Apple will put a TV tuner in this thing (if it's real). Think about it -

Point 1 - If Apple puts a tuner in then they have to deal with the myriad of different types of TV.

Point 2 - THEY SELL TV SHOWS!

Does Steve want you to Tivo the new episode of "The Office" on your "MediaMac/Airport Express Video/Super iPod" or does he want you to come to the iTunes store and download it for $2? Apple, despite most of our (including my own) beliefs is a business and they have to think of the $$$ first.

Why give something away when you can make money off it? That's still my theory as to why the mini didn't have a tuner from the start.

Yeah there's very little point to add something to your product lines which will compete with your existing products/services unless you are going for full market control aka De Beers.

Face it the Conroe Mac is coming.

    iMac 24" - $1999

    Mac Pro (downgraded to 2.0 Ghz) + 23" - 3198

That is a $1k price gap.

A high quality midtower would fit perfectly. They have another chip to differentiate the product matrix. It is coming!

Mac Mini - Core Duo (yonah) - base entry machine. 2 RAM slots
iMac - Core 2 Duo (Merom) - All in one basic to prosumer models, quiet operation and powerful. 2 RAM Slots
"Mac" - Core 2 Duo (Conroe) - mini tower 1 optical, 2 drives, 2 PCIe, 4 RAM Slots - prosumer to low end workstation.
Mac Pro - Xeon (Woodcrest) - Full tower 2 processors, 8 RAM slots, 4 PCIe, 2 optical, 4 drive bays. - Mid to high end workstation.

Sounds kind of feasible for a single CPU "Mac" Conroe system and it would fit nicely into the Apple product line up. I think a Conroe system would appeal nicely to prosumers and gamers.

    Hmm mixed feelings about this.

I want them to be successful, but I also want:
    - DVD extras
    - HD resolution
    - burnable to disc
    - rental system

I hope success won't lull them into thinking the current restrictions are ok. :(

Oh well, I can stick with DVDs.

You want HD quality downloads but you can "stick" with DVD's? Do you understand how much information there is for a HD movie? Try one of the new disc formats, but you want to be able to download it? Crazy!

I agree on the rental system however, I wouldn't mind renting but it would have to be cheaper of course.

I have an original mac portable sitting next to my 11". Laptop design has only downsized from this original beast and gotten faster.

I am not impressed yet. Incremental updates, nothing major or breakthrough.
That's just how it will always be. I'll hold onto this 11" for 8 years and guess what. It's replacement will be just an 11" roll out touch screen computer.
That is where this is going in 8 years and I am still not impressed.

I'd say switch the last two, make the ipod the 'one more thing' event and have the itunes movie store presented after the new mbp's. That would be a smoother transition ("oh, on your new mbp, you can download movies with the new itunes movie store") and then after that say "and one more thing, we also have the new ipod for you movie enjoyment." Who knows (besides steve jobs), but that's just my two cents worth.

My gues is that all these whiners would not even notice if you snuck in at night and swapped out ther procesor for a C2D chip. They'd just wake up the next moring fire up the computer and never even notice.

It's like those audiophiles who argue endlessly about if gold plated or silver plated speaker wire sounds better.

Oh... Core 2 Duo gold and silver plated speaker wire tomoorow too!

There's two things going on here...

    2) More importantly, the big problem is the loud minority that has emerged from within Greenpeace (and other similar organizations). There is a growing problem in this country of people taking the "one person can make a difference" idea and translating it into "act inapporpriately and without moral or social constraint, or you wont get noticed." This is GIANT problem. People aren't being held accountable for their actions anymore, especially when their actions are tied to some sort of noble cause.
    Amen.

Yes, they should just just shut-up and vote for corporate-sponsored Republicrats or Converalabour every four or five years and take it.

It's a shame that there is no longer any meaningful democracy.

I think all this jumping "ohh.. the next MBP will be out at the next apple event" is silly, as there is nothing we can do about it! But I like it! :D

I too think we will see some Merom MBP's completely redesigned on the 24th as they have been using the same case for for the powerbooks too, and with the heat and various other problems with some MBP's they may have reached the limit to what they can do with the case, so the only way to move on up, may be to redesign.

    I'm all for it!
Can't wait for the Merom, as i've been waiting all summer for the new MBP's, (and now summer has gone!) to use, as i've never had a Mac, and there is no real rush for it, so i'd thought I'd wait for a BETTER one!! :-)

I give up! Before you know it, we will be selling our Merom MBP's on eBay to flood this place with comments like "Can't wait for the new Kentsfield (or laptop equiv) 4 core beasts with 4GB of RAM and 250GB HDD's with blueray DVD's etc.

    BRING IT ON!! :D
Love it - it's part of the whole buying experience.

Some people have already mentioned AirFoil for audio, and there's AirView for video.

Airfoil still needs the Airfoil installed on your computer to work, it won't run with just the iOS apps. I think pika2000 is asking about iOS apps that emulate an airport express, so that you could send the same audio to every device in your house.

I stopped at the Apple store this morning and tried out the 24 inch iMac and the Mac Pro. These are sweet machines. No did not buy anything.

The systems both had 1 gig on them and I compared them to a MacBook Pro. One weird thing.... the 24 incher had some stuttering on the iMoviedemo they all had. However the second time I tried it it was smoth as silk. I think it was not cached in memory and since the second time it was it ran smothly. I was also plesantly surpriced that the 24 incher screen was very readable at it highest setting even with my bad eyes. Nice screen realstate and resolution with nice easy to read fonts.

Im still waiting for Leopard to release these powerful anymals of their chains. By them the systems will be even better, maybe even incluse Santa Rosa.

I guess I've got mind whip lash from the transition to Intel. It's still kinda hard to wrap the mind around these speed improvments. I'm still used to the very modest speed bumps from the PPC days.

How wonderfully refreshing it is to see these leaps in speed with each product update. I hope this pace keeps up. Some may disagree, but I think it's spectacular compared to what we used to get from Moto/Freescale/IBM.

Nonsense. Maybe at the very end, but we used to see updates like 800mhz-->1Ghz. That's a 25% increase in performance (if processor power is the limiting factor). Even the G5 went dual 2.0 --> dual 2.5 in one jump, which is a bigger increase than this.

This is NOT the promised 20% increase; it's a 10% increase. Some areas may show more, but that only means that some show less.

I'm just not sure why everyone is so impressed with these imacs. The 24" was a great addition (and the low-end 17" for $1k is nice too), but the 17" and 20" are the same as the old models except for a processor speed bump and 1 GB RAM standard. All that for less money is not bad, but it's hardly thrilling considering that it's the first update in 8 months.

Wow. That's quite a diatribe. Historically inaccurate, too. English common law descends from the Roman system of laws that predates christianity (and which was not based on judaism) and from Saxon law, which also has nothing to do with judeo-christian ethics.

And juries are given instructions to follow the letter of the law as explained to them by the judge. Further, in the U.S. system, only matters at law, not equity, are subject to jury trial, and, in many cases, only if the defendant demands a jury trial.

    You say:

"You are either deliberately infringing on the rights of others or you are not."

Ok. So when your third grader copies a few quotes from a book for his book report, he is infringing the copyright statute. But, of course, you complain that it's not the letter of the law that matters - it's the spirit. That's why judges came up with the fair use defense (later codified into the statute).

But what if the third grader copies 10 quotes? Still okay? A chapter? How about now? Where's the dividing line? What if instead of a third grader, it's another author who copies a few of the best quotes and competes with the first author? How about then? Gets more complicated, huh?

And that's why the fair use defense has evolved into a complicated legal test involving multiple factors. Among the factors:

the purpose and character of your use
the nature of the copyrighted work
the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and
the effect of the use upon the potential market.

    Let's look at these.

    1) the purpose and character of your use

This is often called the transformative test. Am I creating something new and different and worthwhile to society, involving my own creativity? Many people say that the use in this case was pretty creative and useful, but let's assume no. So this factor weighs against fair use.

    2) the nature of the copyrighted work

Published works, such as these icons, are entitled to less protection than unpublished. Also, factual or representative works, such as icons, are entitled to less protection than creative works like novels. So this factor weighs for fair use.

    3) the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and

A handful of icons out of an entire operating system? Seems small to me. Weighs for fair use.

    4) the effect of the use upon the potential market.

By using these icons, is the "infringer" somehow preventing Apple from selling this sort of software, or preventing Apple from selling these icons? No. Again, weighs for fair use.

You simultaneously argue that things are black and white (you either infringe or you don't) and then you argue that the spirit of the law matters, not the letter. You argue for a bright line test, then for shades of gray.

Well, the answer is a little of both, but men and women far smarter than you have come up with the best tests they can to figure out how to deal with these fuzzy situations.

You can go to church and pray instead of going to court, if you'd like, but for those of us that believe in the legal system, we take solace in the fact that things really aren't black and white, and yet there is a framework in place that let's us try and figure these things out.
LOL. Please tell us which law firm you work for. That was quite funny. Are you a historian now too? Would the real cmaier please stand up?

So the arbitration system comes from the roman law as well? Do tell.

I'm not interested in what revisionist historians have come up with the justify this perversion of justice that you call "law". The roman empire fell a long time ago and while Roman law may have influenced much of our legal proceedings, including the structure of civil cases, I was talking about how civil disputes are generally dealt with. Lawyers arguing a case are supposed to be the last resort, not the first.

This process is based on Judeo-christian principles on how you settle disputes over land or labour. It has nothing to do with criminal law.

Here is how disputes were supposed to be dealt with.
    1. You go to the person in question and try to talk it out.
    2. If that does not work, you meet in front a mediator such as as priest, local official, magistrate or arbitrator.
    3. If that does not work, you hire an advocate and make your case in front of the community.
    4. If that does not work, you take your case before the court which would usually have been a king back in the day.

The bible frames it slightly different but that is the gist of how it appears in the bible.

To put in a modern context:
    1. Go for coffee.
    2. Arbitration.
    3. Public Hearing.
    4. Court case.

I am not really crazy about this design. Having to slide the click-wheel down every time I need to use my phone doesn't sound like fun (plus, what would this thing look like open? ...what I'm picturing is ugly).

I was hoping for an iPod Nano form factor with a numerical keypad... nice an simple.

I would have thought the same thing.. but I used a Sony Erricson phone for awhile.. iWalk I think they called it ?? but it had a simplified buttons under the screen, if you needed to "Dial" a number you could flip out the buttons. But most often you are either "answering" your phone, or pulling up a number from the directory, either case you don't need a full number pad key for. As it was, I almost never revealed the keypad on that phone.

From what I can tell Merom is just a Conroe that can operate at a lower TDP. They're all just fabricated off the same piece of silicon. (Someone posted an image on this.)

That's right. Even Woodcrest is part of the same family. They're just designed and engineered for different purposes (mobile, desktop, server).

What's missing to me is the uniform marketing scheme to help sell potential customers. Intel has Centrino Duo currently, presumably Centrino 2 Duo (terrible name, in my opinion) for Merom, Core 2 Duo/Extreme (equally terrible) for Conroe, but I haven't heard anything for Woodcrest. Xeon Duo? Xeon Core 2? I have no idea.

The point is that they all have a lot in common, but it's easy to get confused, and Intel isn't really helping at this point. Where are the marketing people to get it right? At least Apple's scheme is somewhat better--Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro--more clearly defined segmentation in my opinion.
