Too big! This is what M$ didn't understand. The value of a tablet is NOT simply being able to write on the screen of a laptop. Tablets need to be comfortable in one hand, they need to be able to collect information (text, drawing, audio, still and motion video), they need to be able to play back information (on its own screen, but also on TVs, projectors, etc), and they need to be able to sync up with home computers. I probably want some functional capabilties (e.g. iPhoto red eye and retouch, or simple text/excel type input) but I DO NOT NEED TO RUN PHOTOSHOP ON MY TABLET! I will transfer my data/photos/video onto my main computer to do that kind of work.
If you give me a highly portable dock (something I can toss in a bag, and whip it out if I need it), then I won't need a bevy of I/O devices (firewire, s-video, etc) on the tablet itself. That can shrink the size, weight, and heat output.
If Apple does release a device like this, I make only one prediction about it. Some idiot will try to run Quake on it and report the framerate. "Because how can you justify an $(N*100) device that runs Quake at only (F) fps?"

A note from a reseller posted on xlr8yourmac yesterday notes that ALL their MB/P orders were delayed until the 19th.
I do the ordering for Macs for my company, i ordered a 17" MBP for our new art director early sept and it arrived about a less than a week later. I ordered a new 15" MBP yesterday and the shipping date was Sept 20.
However, i just read this forum and cancelled the order thinking perhaps i rather not take the risk and wait for the new macbooks, hopefully they do come out on the 19th or 25th.
looking good boys. all of the pieces are fitting together now. delayed orders, resellers saying the same thing, BTO's taking much longer. i think it's finally gonna happen.
It does seem to finally be happening. I had been a little disheartened this past week or two with the lack of MPB update information/rumors on this site, but it looks like things are starting to go full steam. It's beginning to get exciting again (hopefully without the disappointment of past high hopes. :) )

Who knows, considering that WWDC is developer centric, what if Apple releases an API to allow either software to be ported to the device's OS and to allow third-party developers to write applications for the phone. I'm really looking forward to this year's WWDC more than I have past event. It's getting exciting.

With Pandora or just having an iPhone/iPod, I don't see a point streaming music, max 20Gb, what if there is not internet, what if you stop subscribing. Doesn't sound like a breakthrough idea to me. :cool:Huh? Pandora? What are you smoking? :cool:

with raven's latest explanation of the trap rule, there is no significant difference between explore-move and move-explore, and i decided to be conservative in case the jokesters upstairs put a trap right away at the start.
at level one we are very weak and any encounter with a trap or lowest-level monster means certain death for at least one of us. we need to uplevel asap.

You do realize that this was mostly driven by multi-national corporations that didn't want to pay software engineers money to update all of the ancient legacy software right? Do you also believe MS wanted IE6 to stick around for 10 years? :rolleyes:

I wasn't aware that other countries looked down on products manufactured here, that's a shame.
Most don't, but for the average Whereverian, two questions spring to mind when seeing a US flag on the side of the box:
1) shouldn't I really be buying stuff made right here in Wherever?
2) Alright, so the case was screwed together in the US, but isn't this still just Chinese engineering at its finest[1]?
At least Apple, with their 'Designed in California' motto, are being honest.
[1] Case in point, since someone already mentioned them, Chrysler. Their chassis were largely warmed over obsolete MB tech. Half their 'made in the US' line isn't. And, like just about everyone else in the industry, the lion's share of components in those cars came from global supply lines. I agree with you that the 30" display is big. I disagree with you about any larger display as being too big. It may be for you but not for others. When I first starting using my 30" display besides my 23" display I thought it was big. Using it with my 17" PowerBook even makes it seem bigger. But the only thing that could hold me back from purchasing a larger display would be the need of purchasing a new computer to be able to use 2 larger screens at the same time. My 17" PowerBook can only use one. My MDD PowerMac can only use one. But that is really a different question.
Many people seem to have tunnel vision when they use their computers & are or at least think they are happy with one 15" display. Others can see the need & usefulness of a larger display. At least you use a 30". But if Apple would have come out with a 32", 35" or larger display instead would you have purchased it the same as you did your 30" model? Then it would take a 40" or 45" display to be too larger.
With DualLink only able to support 3840 X 2400 & Single Link only able to support up to 1920 X 1200, there will be a natural size limitation until one of the new systems come around. The need probably isn't there yet, but a couple more size and/or reolution increases would change all of that.
How long do you think it will be before someone else says that his 45" display is all the larger anyone would ever need, so why make one larger? Whan I sold computers many thought that the 17" CRT was too larger, why go larger than 15"?

I completely get what you're saying. After using my 30" for a little over a year on a daily basis, when using any other system, it's VERY tough. And even when I am using my 30", I often crave even more real estate, especially when working with digital photos, but even when I'm just surfing the web.
But, at this point in time (2006), I think a 40"+ screen is just simply too large for the average deskspace. Perhaps there's a place for them in production studios, etc., but even with that market, which is already limited, cost is just too big of a factor. To make a panel @ 40" with a resolution of 3840x2400, or even smaller, would be ASTRONOMICAL. We're talking at least $6K for each display, and the power needed to run that doesn't yet exist. Even Quad-SLI on PC's are having trouble running games at native res. Imagine Motion (since we all know OS X isn't a gaming platform) at 3840x2400? The power just isn't there yet.
Now, I agree, larger screens are the way of the future. But I just don't think that future is here yet.
Then again, $20 says I'm wrong :).

It's all about the average consumer -- the average consumer is bombarded by ads for **** like "The THUNDERBOLT!" or the new HTC Compassion/Inspire/GagInducingName. The average consumer walks into a Verizon store when his contract is up and is told he can get an Android phone for free if he signs up for 2 years, or that he can get a free Android phone for his wife/kid if he buys one for $99.
Apple is losing this battle on many fronts.

i would really welcome this. i have been using mobileme when it was free and called iTools, then i used .mac.
if apple wants to compete with all the free services out there, like dropbox, all of google's cloud based apps, etc, they need to make their service free.
i love the seamless integration of mobileme with my macbook pro, iphone, and ipad. and i love my .mac email address. i've had it for years.
mobileme has been extremely useful and it would make it even better if it were free.

..so at the BOTTOM of the case there is cool air (at least cooler then on top, since hot air rises), that means if the PSU is on the bottom it gets cool air and expells hot hair out the back of the case (NOT inside the case, meaning NO hot air coming out of the PSU back will stay in the case and get things even hotter).
Since the Mac Pro has separate compartments for the processors, extension cards and PSU / optical drives, it doesn't matter where the PSU is whatsoever!

Speed. (Of course, you do have to download it first.) ;) But you don't have to wait for the disk to arrive.
Entirely dependant on your Internet connection. Some people can go grab the disk and be back home much faster than it would take to download all 8 GB. ;)

Retina is clearly defined by minimum 300 px/in resolution, so distance from monitor there is nothing to do with. Sitting 10 meters from monitor don't transform your monitor to hiperRetina. Please...

The size of a pixel is relative to its distance from your eye. The further away something it is, the smaller it becomes relatively and thus your eye has more trouble seeing it. Sitting further from your monitor can make the pixels iPhone 4 size in no time at all.

The MBP already feels like its about to literally melt on my desk now, and that's with the 31W Core Duo.
What's gonna happen when they drop in a 34W C2D? That's 9.6% more wattage, means more heat.
I really think the MBPand MB are under-engineered to remove the heat from the Core Duo. I hope they re-engineer the cooling before releasing the MBP C2D. IMHO, Apple has a black eye over the heat issues with their notebooks.
According to this review, it runs measurably (not necessarily significantly) cooler with longer battery life, etc.

Free sounds good to me. I mean, it could be like Apple's Windows Live only everyone says Mobile Me is better and does other things. I would like to have a .me or .mac (whatever) email address like PC users have .live or .hotmail addresses for free.
And syncing will probably be something my dad will use... even though I think he already pays for mobile me anyway O.o
