Good for Apple. Get those tree hugging hippies out of there. Everytime Greenpeace complains Steve Jobs kills a baby seal.I think Steve Jobs considered himself one of those hippies. He only eats organic foods and is a vegan. He rides a bike too. We saw him ride to Stanford Shopping Center a couple months ago. I doubt he likes any group affecting his bottomline, but I bet he's pushing to make things more environmentally friendly. Plus, there's plenty of places to recycle electronics and I'm not sure why corporations are being held responsible. I'd imagine waste managment companies could offer that service as they do recycling for other products. I'm a firm believer that it's an individuals responsibility to recycle, but companies need to make an effort in the production process as well.

    How sad,
I mean a person lost his life because of his actions, and the guard now has to live with the fact that he took a life. All for what - some iToys? Doesn't seem worth it. :(
    I agree. Incredibly sad. :(

I just hope they don't stick iSights in all the displays.

I know, it would be nice, but have you ever worked in a government installation before? No photographic devices of any kind. Co-workers at my last job are stuck with PowerBooks because they can't bring a MacBook (Pro) into any area that contains classified material, and many of them have their offices in such locations. If they couldn't buy new Cinema display I'm sure they'd be even more annoyed.

Sucked for some that had to find cell phones without a camera, too.

I was under the understanding that the reason that the current 320M has been so impressive considering the aging Duel Core CPU was the increased speed of data transfer from the SSD meaning a large increase in efficiency in both the CPU and the GPU.

So surely it stands to reason that if the intergrated GPU of Sandy Bridge is only slightly less powerful than the current 320M but will be partnered with the SSD and a MASSIVELY more powerful CPU then the sandy bridge MBA will be at least as powerful in graphics terms than the currant MBA.

Am I just being stupid thinking that?

320M has OpenCL. Intel does not have OpenCL. All Intel graphics are thus bad.

So how soon should I expect to see a Merom in a MacBook? "Some months later," or "many months later" than it's appearance on a MacBook Pro? Why not sooner? Just to differentiate the product lines? I thought Merom would replace Yonah in general. I read one report suggesting Merom would be introduced at the same time as the Conroe official introduction near the end of this month.

BTW, Hannibal posted his opinion of Core 2 Duo on Ars, along with his opinion of most other reviewers:

In Virginia Tech for instance there was heroics. The professor held his body agains the door and prevented the gunmen from entering and killing more people. The bullets passed through the door and killed the professor but he was a hero Or does he need a gun to be a hero?

"Heroics???" Who cares about heroics if you're dead??? This isn't a video game. The obvious best-case situation would have been a student pulling a pistol from his backpack and shooting the shooter in the head after the first couple of murders.

Tell you what - you hold your body against the door, I'll use my gun.

There would have been no preventing that guy from killing. Sure he might have been killed. But he would have killed before people got their guns out to shoot back. And If there had been more people carrying guns there likely would have been cross fire from incompetent gun toters.

Wow, your logic processor needs calibration. Of course he would have killed some. Would he have killed that many? NO.

And notice I keep saying "armed and trained." You don't buy a handgun at the 7-11 and throw it in your pack. To use your quote, "It doesn't work that way."

It is a fantasy story you concoct. But keep dreaming.

I think the only fantasy here is the one playing out in your head.

Perhaps someday you'll get to be the hero. Lets hope you don't wet yourself in the process.

Based on your commentary, I'm sure I'm far more prepared than you. (And being a "hero" has nothing to do with it.)

Hey, they could build a little hub with a cord that plugs into the TB port and provide a few USB 1,2,3 ports, maybe a firewire port, plus a glowing Apple logo on top and call it an iHub.

I bet the only TB thingie Apple will build is 1Gbit Ethernet adapter for MBA
lowly iHubs will be served by Griffins and Belkins of the world though ...

I downloaded Enemy of the State for the heck of it. Sound and video quality were very good, and the $9.99 price is right, too, especially since I do not have to have a DVD box taking up shelf space. Looking forward to the set-top box, whatever it ends up being called.

I volunteered only to further my college applications. I really couldn't give a crap about the people my work supposedly helped. All I care about is that it helped me.

I don't view myself as cold hearted, I view myself as being a realist. This "let's be nice to everyone" crap has turned 95% of society into blithering retarded bleeding hearts. I only care about people who I can use to further myself, or those who have genuinely done something caring for me (family); otherwise you are completely expendable to me (take note anyone who works under me in a decade). I do not feel that society's rules apply to me, because I simply know that I am better than many of the people in society; the rules (including speed limits) are there for lesser folk. Look at our pop culture, it shows how stupid most are. What you call morally and ethically bankrupt, I call opportunistic and motivated.

    You are cold hearted.
Being a realist has nothing to do with your heart.

I personally view myself as a realist but I am far from cold hearted. I care about people.

I really hope it takes until november or december. Watching you all squirm and making positive posts predicting a swift release for your own peace of mind is entertaining, and probably educational.

Then this is the place to be right now if you want to see a lot of people squirming with anticipation. Unfortunately, the C2D will be shipping in select Mac systems in the next two to three weeks, so you're entertainment will be short lived. Sorry. But until that time, have a good time. :p

In my experience, I immediately assume that using any electronic device with some kind of attachment to the internet, that what I am doing is splayed across the airways and collected by various agencies, be them Ad agencies, government agencies etc. I already know that I can be tracked, and called listened to, with no warrent. After those two privacies are gone, this doesn't seem like a real big deal to me.

Its gonna sound douchey, but the odds are, astronomical vegas odds, that no one gives a **** who you are and where your at currently. Unless your a criminal, then who gives a ****? People love to heap worth upon themselves that doesn't exist. Your not a political figure, your a ******* with a iPhone working at McDonalds, calm the **** down and stop worrying about the government tracking you down and concentrate on my Hash Browns.

As far as I can see I don't have a problem with law enforcement agencies being able to see into it, I have nothing to hide.

Maybe if we were on a Android open system this might be a problem. :P

Newbie question - please don't flame me.

How big of a transition is this, as compared - for example - to the Intel chip back around 2006? What I mean is, after the transition to Intel, certain software and eventually the newest operating system itself could no longer be run on the old chip. So, is this transition as significant as that, or is this more of a speed boost kind of thing?

    Thanks.

Compared to the switch to Intel, or the switch to a new form factor, this is minor, much less significant. It's basically a speed boost with possibly a few new gee-gaws.

Also, the refresh cycle is not set in stone, so a new iMac could come out tomorrow or it may be six months away. If you need a new iMac, buy one. When the new version comes out, the iMac you bought won't be any slower.

Also, Apple has a 14 day return policy, so if you buy an iMac and a new version comes out a week later, just take it back and upgrade.

I would love to have a red iPod, but I don't know why we would ever give money to help fight AIDS on a continent where the people take NO precautions to prevent themselves from getting AIDS...
Pretending that your trolling is real:

Money to fight AIDS includes educational efforts so people WILL take precautions.

Just like the educational efforts we have here in the US, where people are not lifetime monogamous :)

PS, "we" wouldn't be giving the money, Apple would. "We" would just get a new color iPod :)

There are many wonderful things about the African people, but there were also many wonderful things about the Dinosaurs, the Dodo bird, and numerous others.
I assume you're not really equating natural selection and genetic evolution, with cultural factors like education.

Because they're actually not the same thing, nor do they work the same.

For instance, here's an interesting fact: dying is necessary for natural selection to work. Dying is NOT necessary for education to work.

So you see, there's an option that involves less dying and suffering. That's what you may be overlooking in your zeal :)

By your logic, why help anyone, when letting them die will make people "smarter and wiser?" Why, children who get hurt on skateboards and behind the wheel should be turned away from hospitals. We would create a super race worthy of the 3rd Reich :o

(Need I mention that much of mathematics, astronomy, and science came from "rudimentary" and "archaic" African scientists who were far ahead of their European counterparts? I'm guessing whatever you have been reading may have omitted some parts of history :) )

I'm still taken aback by Sun doing what Intel's doing now, but doing it 8-10 years ago. What the heck happened to SUN?

Were you reading propaganda from Sun, or something from an unbiased source?

The P6 systems that you're talking about in the mid '90s were very similar in architecture to today's Intel systems.

The P6 systems had a shared FSB, so memory bandwidth was shared by the two processors. The SPARC systems usually had a crossbar switch, so that in theory each CPU had a private memory path. (The Woodcrest systems have an FSB per socket, to a shared memory controller.)

While the crossbar really shined when you had 32, 64 or more processors with many, many GiB of RAM - for a dual CPU system it really wasn't worth the cost.

Woodcrest, the PPC G5, and AMD aren't using crossbar memory controllers today....

While my gut wants to side with MS on this one, there's a simple test of whether App Store is generic or not.

Before apple created the App Store within iTunes, was the term in use (and specifically "app store", not just "app")? Possibly more importantly, before they applied for the trademark was any company selling apps and calling it by that term?

It probably comes down to prior art - if it truly is a generic term, then someone should be able to provide the example of X used the term in 19XX, before the trademark was filed. Anyone here able to provide an example of the term being used before Apple filed for it?

I converted to Linux in 2007 and Mac in 2009 after using Windows since version 3.1 and don't miss a thing! It's true what they say "Mac's just work."

That is the funny thing I was thinking about either going Linux (just so I don't need to listen to my mac wife tease me about my conversion to the light.) But if I want something that as you say "Just works" why go linux, I might fool around with that by setting my Dell up to dual boot, just upgraded it to 300 GB internal drive so plenty of space.

I had also thought of grabbing a netbook, and making a hackintosh, but that isn't reliable or realistic for daily computing needs either.

But I must say the thing that was perhaps the most instrumental in my thinking of going mac, was android.

I wanted a phone that just worked and was looking at iPhone vs Android. In my opinion the iPhone is a more reliable platform, due to the fragmentation of droid. Too many manufacturers, with their own independent specs, and a separate entity creating the software.

If you extrapolate the fragmentation of droid argument, it is an equally valid argument against windows.

Apple is in my opinion the Volvo of the computer world. And at this point, working full time, while also taking night classes and working on an undergrad degree, a volvo is what I need.

On a side note, I just went to the apple store, and looked at the 27" imacs....

Ok, maybe I just should get one of those when they refresh. I thought my wife had the 27", but she must actually have the 24"

Those 27" ones are very pretty. More space than I have on the 2 screens I have now combined. I could just use my Ipad 2 when I get one as a 2nd remote screen and call it a day. Damn they look nice.

I've been told "Once you go Mac you don't go back!"

Judging from my experience with my iPhone 3GS making me wanting to get an iMac 27" inch Quad Core I may agree.

I think that is what my experience is turning into. Just swap for a iphone 4 and not caring as much about quad core.

This is what I've been hoping for. You purchase a "license" and your content is available anywhere on any device. You can download it locally as well, but it's there in the cloud waiting for you. Movies/Music/Games etc. The end to buying on multiple formats, worry about losing/deleting etc. But I'm not sure this model will end up beating out music/movie subscription services.

Yes, but that doesn't matter. The word Windows is no generic IT word, while app(lication) is. That's the difference.

"Apple" can't be used to trademark a fruit, but it can be used to trademark a computer. "Windows" can't be used to trademark "windows of a house" but it can be for an operating system. "App store" can be trademarked for a brothel but not for a store that sells computer applications.
One, windows is a generic IT word. Yes, it is. That's WHY M$ named it Windows, because it was a term that described what you see on screen. Personally, I was annoyed when they called it that for their 2bit crap OS shell. Two, that doesn't matter today, M$ is not going after people for usage of "windows". Three, Apple can certainly attempt to trademark a term. That's why we have trademarks. All these arguments are circular. "You can't because you can't." Silly.
Yeah -- makes you wonder why the American Revolution ever happened. We replaced somebody who ruled by birthright with somebody who ruled by the merits of being a better lawyer. I guess you can't win. If only all political leaders could have been like George Washington who hated political parties.
Yes, military rulers have always been so wonderful in human history.
I'll say it again "App Store" is a generic term, I think everyone should be able to use it.. I hope Apple doesn't win this one.. If someone used "Mac App Store", completely understandable..
See, that's really the point. Apple was the first to use this term. It doesn't matter what letters it uses, it's the combination that is at stake, here. I don't care who wins, they could certainly trademark this no problem. That's what a trademark is, if your term was so strange and unrelated to your industry, you wouldn't need legal backup.
