Sorry, there is no comparison. US agriculture does not have anywhere near the level of protectionism as Japanese agriculture. Nor does any US industry, with the exception of defense contractors.

And what makes you think a small farmer is somehow superior to DelMonte?

As for who subsidizes agriculture more, I'm unsure, but it's probably close. From the wikipedia article: "A Canadian report claimed that for every dollar U.S. farmers earn, 62 cents comes from some form of government, with total aid in 2009 from all levels of government adding up to $180.8 billion." What's the comparative level in Japan?

The small farmer vs. delMonte is an interesting question. It's a question of values. DelMonte produces cheaper, lower quality food. Small farmers produce more expensive, generally higher quality food. So which you subsidize is a question of social policy.

In Japan, there are lots of small farmers who have kept their farms, and a very strong bias to eat locally. This means that food is of better quality and supports local communities. In the US, massive supermarket chains have tended to dominate food retail, and since they rely on national distribution, food tends to be very processed and have an enormous carbon footprint. It also means lots of mcJobs instead of local businesses.

    I prefer the small farmer.

The MBP already feels like its about to literally melt on my desk now, and that's with the 31W Core Duo.

What's gonna happen when they drop in a 34W C2D? That's 9.6% more wattage, means more heat.

I really think the MBPand MB are under-engineered to remove the heat from the Core Duo. I hope they re-engineer the cooling before releasing the MBP C2D. IMHO, Apple has a black eye over the heat issues with their notebooks.

According to this review, it runs measurably (not necessarily significantly) cooler with longer battery life, etc.

Why not? They did it with the iBooks for quite some time...
Yes, but the G3 was a more power efficient chip than the G4, while the opposite is true of the Core vs the Core2. Apple should put Core2 chips in the MacBooks ASAP, if only for the power saving. And Apple should also try to maximize the percentage of its user base that is 64 bit capable prior to the release of OS X 10.5, which should be 64 bit.

Don't forget that when they ship, the Core2 chips will cost as much as the Core chips do now. So, if Apple doesn't upgrade the MacBooks to Core2 or drop their prices, it will start to look like it is less competitive in pricing again.

What is most sad in this article is the amount of greed. Apple gets its displays, processor, etc from Samsung. However, this is not enough. Samsung wants more, so they try and copy what Apple is doing. Corporate greed at its finest. Apple should have also included in the contract, "We'll buy parts from you, but you are not allowed to build a competing product".

    Queue the hitler response.....

And when Hitler's constituents thought he was wrong, he decided to annihilate those who didn't want to see things his way too. Destroying opposition rather than improving one's self is way's a "#WINNING" thing to do.

Wow, I gotta get some credit for that one... Charlie Sheen, Apple, and Hitler all in one sentence!

Hitler? What the heck. This is one company exercising their right to control its product. How you got to Hitler is beyond bizzare. This is just an electronic device

That doesn't mean the App Store version is. Only that the "pirated" versions are. They could have been made bootable after the fact.

Quite true, I'm pretty sure it was. But at least it's possible somehow.

I don't see how Apple could get away with not having a way to make an install backup. The recovery partition is not good enough. It's a fact of life that hard drives die.

Come on Apple, that's just being cheap. Great, so let the user download the image and then what? Now they have to burn it to a DVD (probably a double-layer DVD too, which are a lot more expensive than a regular single-layer DVD). I love the App Store concept, but not for OS releases like this. And no way in hell am I using some "upgrade" option instead of a clean install.

    1. You don't need to burn it to DVD to install it.
    2. You can still wipe the disk via Disk Utility in the installer if you want to do a clean install. For separate disks/partitions at the moment, I think.

And Amazon thinks crippling ioS compatibility will be good business? FAIL.

Since iOS is increasingly becoming a smaller market share in mobile phones over Android based phones; I'd say there isn't much point catering for iOS. You may as well say that the fact that there is no Atari version that it's a fail.

No doubt that an iOS app will be on the way, or a third party dev will make one that works. Either way, iOS isn't a priority.

64bit OS & software on a 64 bit processor (especially a dual core) is much better at multitasking, for one.

64 bit has nothing to do with multitasking.

Really? So we just disregard the ACTUAL start and end times of seasons now? June 21 to Sept 21 is summer.

Calendar wise it is... but most people don't view the middle of September as "summer". Meteorological summer is over by then, and that's MUCH more important, IMO.

I have to admit, it was an odd stance for me to take, too. (I'm pretty much a libertarian, yet I found myself arguing with a conservative Republican who was completely against the idea of tariffs ever being of any value.)

My point to him was, although I find tariffs to be evil, *sometimes*, I think they're a necessary evil, because we don't really have any other effective tools to use to prevent another nation from dumping products on us at below cost, in an effort to put one of our own industries under. IMO, China is essentially doing this with things like computers and electronics because they're selling the products to us without incorporating all of the *true* costs of their manufacture. (EG. They're destroying complete cities and rivers over there with pollution, rather than incurring the cost to properly dispose of/handle the byproducts of the production.)

I'm all for a free market, but I think the playing field has to be somewhat level too, for it to function properly. We've reached a point now where the United States says it respects certain basic human rights and freedoms, (including providing workers with a safe working environment) - yet we want our companies to compete directly with goods we're bringing in from other countries who don't share any of those values. At some point, that becomes impossible.

Historically, we used to pay FAR more for a computer in the 80's than we do today, *even* if inflation isn't even factored in! For example, the very popular Radio Shack TRS-80 Model III computer? They wanted $2,495 for it with 32K of RAM and dual floppy drives, back in 1980!

I like to get a good value as much as the next guy, but honestly - we've collectively been paying too low a price for our computer gear in recent years. It's reached a point where it's causing a lot of long-term damage at the expense of the initial good of getting a great price. (Have you seen all the consolidation happening with hard drive manufacturers, recently? Great companies have died off and had to merge with other ones because the margins have gotten so low. Remember Maxtor, or Micropolis before them, anyone?)

Are you willing to pay more for your Mac gadgets so they can be made here?

So I just bought a new 4 core Sandy Bridge iMac tonight and now this news breaks. Is ARM actually building anything in any way shape or form that competes with the Intel X86 stuff right now or is this just vaporware at this point?

Rumors and Vapor...and for laptops/mobile devices...

...and 2-3 years before it's even rumored to hit.

Anyway, I can't wait to see the phone...But what better leak could you have?"the sleekest, sexiest damn phone he's ever seen."
If they are making a phone, it's a pretty good teaser.

    isn't dropbox the same thing?

Yes, Dropbox has customizable storage amounts besides their Free and Pro plans, and when you buy an MP3 (or album) from Dropbox, you can store it in your Dropbox and have it not count against your total storage limit.

Further, Cloud Drive clearly includes automatic synchronization from and to your computer and other devices.

No, did you even read any of the article or the page on Amazon? Dropbox still sounds much better (local and cloud copies, with automatic integration and synchronization with the local file system), but besides their clouded-ness, the only thing they seem to have in common is that Dropbox uses Amazon S3 for storage. However, I think Cloud Drive has a lot of potential, especially for music, and if they ever offer a native client for better OS integration (like Dropbox), I think it might take off.

The answer of what was typed is 288. If the entity between the keyboard and chair meant something else, they should have typed something else.

That's all well and good on a forum, but the intention of the author can matter a lot more in real-world scenarios. I completed a my master's research year in chemistry last year, and that involved a lot of equations. If someone in my group had sent me a quick email with this equation I would expect to see-

    (48/2)(9+3) or 48/[2(9+3)]

This is even more important when the equations I was using were a lot more complex!

Nobody in the group thought in terms of /, I've never met a scientist or mathematician who thought in these terms. To treat a / at face value when there were no brackets to verify the exact meaning would have been silly. It could have meant hours or days of wasted work and analysis, and that makes it my problem!

You missed my point; it isn't progress because it's an enormous step backward. It's not the "learning something new" part, it's the "throwing away everything you already know."

Semantics. Your argument boils down to the pain of change.

I would see your point if switching everything to metric would actually make things more efficient, but it wouldn't. People who use Imperial units are already comfortable with it - the system already works, and isn't broken.

Again, the real crux of your argument is that people are 'comfortable' with what they already know. If you were to put that aside and judge between the two systems objectively, I can't see how anyone would actually choose imperial over metric. Metric is the future. No, check that — it's actually the present. You're living in the past Tomorrow.

Can you boot off the stuff in the DMG?

I havent tried that but you can create a bootable USB drive: http://www.blogchampion.com/blog/2011/3/12/how-to-create-a-bootable-mac-os-x-lion-usb-installer-from-ap.html

When I am back home I will try to burn the dmg file and see if it boots.
