I'm not missing anything. Developers care about three things:

    1. Good tools
    2. A device that can run their software well.
    3. A market that lets them get paid

Devs do NOT care about specs unless it prevents them from writing good software. Apple will make sure specs keep up with developer needs. Beyond that, it simply does not matter except to geeks who obsess over specs. No one else cares.

Yes, and 2. and 3. are more and more lagging behind Android in iOS. Keep ignoring the competition and keep believing "Apple will all make it work". Seems to me they are repeating their mistakes of the 80s.

As an iOS device owner and as a developer that's now invested quite some time in an app for iOS (that has yet to ship mind you), I am watching the situation closely and hoping Apple does not let iOS fall behind the competition.

2 means that there are two answers:
    1) the wrong one: any other answer
    2) the right one: 2 itself
    I love my Mac.

It would be a lot harder to cheat a value added tax than income tax.

Plus it would take no time or money to fill out

it would naturally put a larger burden on the rich who spend more

it would be simple to raise/lower

It would naturally exempt charitable giving

it would reduce the tax-code a few thousand pages

It would reduce the need to pay to keep up the IRS program

nobody would be in debt to the IRS

Payroll taxes would be easier to manage

My dad spends two full weeks, and hire personal assistants in order to file taxes as it is. Value added tax instead of income tax would be a blessing

or even a less complicated flat income tax rate would be an improvement

when the white iphone comes out, will we see slightly improved hardware as well? (64gb? Better ANTENNA?) Let me know your thoughts... Will it be soon??? Thanks ! 1. Apple has yet to release any official sales numbers on iPad 2 - at least I haven't come across this anywhere (this would be a perfect piece of anecdotal information at the beginning of a media event)

    2. Phil Schiller said "white iPhone 4 coming spring 2011" (it's now officially Spring and we still haven't seen the white iPhone and therefore would make a nice 'Easter egg' with immediate availability also mentioned at the beginning of a media event)

    3. Apple has typically held iOS media event previews in April (not saying they would never break cycle, just stating the obvious)

IDK, if I were a betting man, I'd say all signs still point to an April media event at which (during the beginning) SJ would announce official iPad sales numbers (for both U.S. and International launch weekends) as well as immediate availability of said white iPhone before proceeding to dive into some of the intricacies of iOS 5. Just my $0.02.

I find this report very hard to believe. An experienced company planning to launch a product, but not signing a contract with a company for x amount of LCD panels, a component that is notoriously in tight supply? Sounds more like Asia decided to raise their prices "due to the Tsunami" and gouge clients. They're doing it Apple, but they can afford to be gouged. RIM probably decided to sit it out for a bit.

This story broke 5 minutes ago and I'm already over it... Who cares if Apple wants to use something they think is new and revolutionary? Your opinion isn't going to stop them. While you're over here thinking "I can't do bootcamp with ARM" Apple is thinking "Bootcamp will be obsolite when we get done here" :apple:

Pretty textbook case of biting the hand that feeds you here, even if Samsung business units are separated.

Exactly! Samsung shouldn't be so quick to rip-off one of their biggest customers.

Who voted negative????? You want it slower, eh? Give the man a G3! No, a 601!

I have been wondering the same thing. No matter how good the news is, there are still a bunch of negative votes. It just re-inforces my belief there is an organized effort to discredit Apple on this site. If it was just individuals, I would wonder why waste time on an Apple website if you did not like Apple? It makes no sense in that scenario. I do believe the PC establishment is worried about the possibility of Apple gaining more of a foothold in corporate America.

Android could gain the other 36% of the market and it would still make less money in a year than Apple makes off iTunes alone in a quarter.

"Android" makes money? Really? Can you provide me with a link of how much Android makes?

Are we going to be alerted every time one of these companies comes out with something new and surpasses the other? Is this really news anymore? Is it really a rumor about things we care about? I wonder.

This is not a rumor. It is a fact. And yes, it does concern Apple because whatever erodes into Apple's net revenue will cause them to make a better product.

on the Macrumors live feed Steve said new announcements coming in the week or next week. Any comments?
Yeah, at 10.24am on the MRL feed, though it was slightly ambiguous. Engadget also picked up on this but gave more detail - it's new universal applications that are being announced this week:

10:24AM - "We had a sixth major release that we don't get much credit for. Tiger on Intel. Porting an OS is is no easy task. And our software team did a great job. They made it look really easy which has enabled this amazing transition. 86 million lines of source code that was ported to run on an entirely new architecture with zero hiccups. Along the way, we created a way to run universal applications that run on PowerPC and Intel. I'm pleased to report that there are more than 3,000 universal applications and we at Apple would like to say, thank you, thank you guys. "You guys have done a phenomenal job and there are a lot more being announced at the developer conference this week."

The MacBook is a "consumer" model. The Pro is for the "Professional", although I'm some sort of a "professional", and my MacBook suits me just fine. (I liked the form factor and the keyboard.) Stuffed with 2G of RAM and a 100G 7.2K drive it runs OS X, Windows & CentOS (via Parallels desktop) just fine. It's like a digital Swiss Army knife - I haven't found much it can't do reasonably well. :o

    I second this opinion.

There's nothing I've hit that a MacBook can't handle as well as I was hoping for, and most things it does even quicker than I thought it would.

And I'm in that "sort of pro" catagory, as well.

Maybe that rate wouldn't be bad, but if you read the article, that's not what they're charging. Beyond the initial free amount, its $1 per 1 gig, not $1 per 20 gigs.
You get 20 gigs if you buy an album on Amazon. Here's an album for a dollar:

    You do the math.

Anyway, what happens if you whole hard drive dies?
What if you want to reinstall everything from scratch?
There is just too many what ifs

I thought about this and while I think having a CD is better for these reasons, I don't think it would leave you up a creek without a paddle.

Either you have an OS that supports Mac App store so you'd have a CD that would at least install that OS (and therefore you could install old OS and go back to Mac app store and reinstall Lion) or you'd have to buy the Lion CD anyways (but in this case if you lose the Lion CD you may be w/out Lion).

So, while the app store does have the advantage that if you buy through them, long as you have the CD from the previous OS (and probably not too expensive to buy a CD off of ebay, don't know, haven't checked) you can re install Lion. WHere as if you buy the CD and lose it, you'll have to buy Lion all over again (and I am betting Lion won't be as "cheap" as Snow Leopard as it isn't considered an incremental upgrade).

But... it also means more hassle if your hard drive does crash cause you'll have to install an OS twice.

So you'd have to install your retail disc of 10.6.3 then update a gig or so to 10.6.6, run the App Store then download 10.7?

There has to be a bootable version.

Not as far as 95% of users are concerned. Most users don't utilize half of what the current device can do.

That might be true, but most people I know walk in to their cell phone stores every 2 years and buy whatever is new. Many of them will choose a new Android or WP7 phone over a year-old iPhone, simply because the guy at the store says "this just came out."

As long as Apple is in bed with carriers on the standard two-year contract, they have to stick to a 12 or 24 month product cycle. 24 months is too long, which leaves the current 12 month cycle.

Personally I think this is all FUD. iPhone 5 will be an incremental upgrade, like the 3GS was, and it will be announced at WWDC. Because it's a fairly small upgrade compared to the other big items of the year (Lion, iOS 5, and likely new Macs with more of a focus on SSD), there will be less talk about it in advance of the event.

Personally, I think we need to increase taxes across the board.

Which is exactly what I said. But you couldn't help twisting the dagger a little bit by saying ...

Democrats - "I am in favor of increasing government taxation, and I have the opportunity to put my money where my mouth is by voluntarily paying more taxes, but I am nonetheless not going to if other people don't."

So are you, on your own, going to voluntarily give money to the government? Or do we get to lump you in with your description of Democrats?

So Steve is saying there is no database of locations? Thats just an outright lie.

Steve did not actually say anything. Someone said he did, MR decided it must be fact. The ease with which these headers can be faked or even fake mails can be be put ion gmail boxes was shown conclusively last year.

These stories should have a much more pronounced disclaimer.

So what is there to expect before MWSF?

    Well, new iPods, for one:

Full Screen Video iPod, possibly with accompanying new iTunes service.
    Redesigned-nano + upgraded
    Updated shuffle (finally)

    Also, new hardware:

New chips for MBP + possible case redesign
    New chips for iMac too

    ---

Does anyone think that this is a bit much to announce at Paris?

But all of it, I think everyone would agree, has to come out before the Christmas shopping season.

So lets break it down into two events, presuming that its too much for Paris.

Paris will either see hardware (i hope) or iPod upgrades.

Then, in late October I'm guessing, in time for the holidays, the new iPods will be released. They will also therefore beat Zune to the market.

    ---

The reason I think hardware will come first is because its been almost 10 months since the MBP and iMac were revised/came out. (17" and iMac for education doesn't count). the iPods typically wait a whole year for a refresh, usually around September.

Suppose subtraction precedes addition, like this: 4-5+6, then the answer would be 5 not -7.

    WTF?
One thing is the rules and mnemonic things invented in some school system, and other is how to properly use your brain to do some math.

Algebraically speaking the expression that you used as a reference will always result in 5.

Mac OS X cannot be wrong on this:

So if the parentheses are solved first why not just put them in front? Why go through all the semantics? Do scientists purposely make it this hard when solving equations?
No, they usually write it using specialized program so you would clearly know if it's

    48
    2 * (9+3)

    or

    ____48___
    2*(9+3)

But really, if you see this as 482(9+3), I think it becomes much more clearer. Most people aren't used to see / used as a division mark other than when using two lines, not used as a simple replacement as it is for computer. But yes they wouldn't go through the trouble of rewriting an equation just to make the order of operation simpler, as that is quite easy when you work with math everyday. But they do tidy up their equations so the intent should become clear. I mean, you could type verbally an equation, this is just the equivalent to punctuation, you put a point and a capital letter to start a new sentence.

This question is purely semantics. But scientists tend to write for other scientists who have no trouble saying this is 288. But most profs I've had hate answering questions over email simply because writing equations with regular characters is crap.

You know, considering that Sony has been able to cram a DL drive in something as tiny as the TX series (not to mention the SZ series), I'm not sure why Apple couldn't do something similar with the 15" MBP.
